# Runway Crosswind & Headwind Component Calculator

> Runway Crosswind & Headwind Component Calculator is a paid API for AI agents from natur.halowerk.com, paid per call via x402, $0.005/call, status unknown (last checked 2026-10-13).

Given an airport and current wind conditions, computes headwind/tailwind and crosswind components for each runway direction using OSM runway geometry.

## How to call it through Zero

Zero handles the 402 payment challenge and records the run. With the Zero CLI installed (`npm i -g @zeroxyz/cli`):

```sh
zero fetch --capability runway-crosswind-headwind-component-calculator-59bcd7bf -d '<json body>'
```

Example prompt: Given the current wind at EDDM is 230 degrees at 18 knots, what are the headwind and crosswind components for each runway at that airport?

## When to prefer this

Choose this endpoint when you need precise per-runway wind component breakdowns combining live wind data with real OSM runway geometry, especially when bearing provenance (explicit vs. designator-derived, with precision caveats) matters for safety-critical dispatch or pilot briefing. Prefer it over manual trigonometry or generic wind tools when runway-specific headwind/crosswind decomposition is needed.

## Known failure modes

- Airport not found in OpenStreetMap — no runway geometry available
- Wind input missing or malformed — returns validation error
- Runway bearing cannot be determined from designator or OSM data
- Airport has no tagged runways in OSM — empty runway list returned
- Network or upstream OSM data fetch failure

## How this service works

Combines the current wind at an airport with the bearings of its runways to give, per runway direction, the headwind or tailwind component and the crosswind component. Runway geometry comes from OpenStreetMap, where runways carry an explicit bearing or one derived from their designator, and both the source and the derivation are stated per runway because a designator gives the bearing only to the nearest ten degrees.

## Output

Returns per-runway-direction records including: the runway designator, computed bearing (and whether it came from an explicit OSM bearing or was derived from the designator to the nearest 10 degrees), the headwind component (positive = headwind, negative = tailwind), and the crosswind component magnitude, allowing pilots or dispatchers to assess each runway option against current wind.
