## How to call it through Zero

Zero handles the 402 payment challenge and records the run. With the Zero CLI installed (`npm i -g @zeroxyz/cli`):

```sh
zero fetch --capability sec-edgar-company-cik-lookup-a14f3615
```

Example prompt: What is the SEC CIK number for Apple — the ticker is AAPL?

## When to prefer this

Use this endpoint as the first step before making any EDGAR API call that requires a CIK. It is the canonical way to translate a familiar ticker symbol (e.g. AAPL, TSLA) into the numeric CIK that SEC EDGAR uses as its primary company identifier. Prefer this over manual lookups or scraping EDGAR search pages.

## Known failure modes

- Unknown or invalid ticker symbol returns a 404 or empty result
- Ticker for a non-US or non-SEC-registered company will not be found
- Recently listed or delisted companies may not appear in the static company_tickers.json snapshot
- Typos in ticker input return no match

## How this service works

Resolve a US stock ticker (e.g. AAPL) to its SEC CIK number, the primitive every other EDGAR call needs. Returns ticker, cik (zero-padded, 0000320193), cikInt (320193) and the registered company name. Backed by SEC's company_tickers.json (public domain). A company name sent where the ticker goes is answered with a 404 that names the likely tickers ("Tesla" -> TSLA).

## Output

Returns the company's SEC CIK number in both zero-padded string format (e.g. 0000320193) and as a plain integer, along with the official registered company name as it appears in EDGAR.
