Prefer this over company registry searches when the use case is counterparty identification, regulatory reporting, or KYC enrichment requiring a globally unique and standardized entity code. Unlike general company search endpoints, this returns LEI-specific structured data with CC0-licensed provenance metadata.
Side effects
- No matching entities found for the given search term — returns empty data with success:true
- Ambiguous name matches multiple entities — returns multiple candidates requiring further filtering
- GLEIF upstream API timeout — may return partial results with complete:false and a warning
- Malformed query parameters — returns success:false with error detail
- Rate or payment issues — HTTP 402 if payment header missing or insufficient
