How this service works
Directions between places (addresses, names or lat,lon) with optional stops: distance in km and miles, travel time, and turn-by-turn steps for driving, trucks, cycling, walking or transit, avoiding tolls, highways or ferries; optional GeoJSON route line.
Output
Returns the total distance in both kilometers and miles, estimated travel time, and a sequential list of turn-by-turn navigation steps. If geometry is requested, also includes a GeoJSON LineString representing the route path. Intermediate waypoints are supported via the 'via' parameter.

It is preferred over geocoding-only endpoints when routing and navigation logic is required, and over general mapping APIs when you need a structured step-by-step itinerary with distance in both metric and imperial units.
Side effects
- Unresolvable origin or destination address returns an error or empty result
- Invalid travel mode value causes a bad request response
- Unreachable route (e.g. island with no ferry without ferry option) may return no route found
- Malformed coordinates or address strings may produce geocoding errors
- Network timeout for very long or complex multi-stop routes
