It covers ~30 currencies and is authoritative for EUR-based conversions. Prefer this over market-rate APIs when the ECB's published benchmark is specifically required.
Side effects
- Unsupported currency code returns an error — only ~30 ECB-listed currencies are valid
- Rate not yet published if called before ~16:00 CET on a working day — returns previous day's rate or an error
- No rate available on weekends or ECB holidays — the rate is only published on working days
- Invalid amount string (non-numeric) may cause a parsing error
- Network/upstream error from ECB XML feed results in a service-level failure
