How this service works
Resolve a stock ticker symbol or company name to its Central Index Key (CIK) - the identifier every other EDGAR endpoint keys on. Exact ticker matches rank first, then company-name prefix/substring matches. Returns each match's zero-padded CIK, numeric CIK, ticker and official company title.
Output
Returns a list of matching companies, each with a zero-padded CIK string, numeric CIK, ticker symbol, and official SEC-registered company title. Exact ticker matches appear first, followed by company-name prefix and substring matches, up to the requested limit (default 10, max 25).

Use this endpoint as the first step before calling any other EDGAR endpoint that requires a CIK. It is the authoritative resolver for mapping human-readable tickers and company names to SEC identifiers, backed directly by the SEC's own company_tickers reference. Prefer this over scraping EDGAR search pages or maintaining your own ticker-to-CIK mapping tables.
Side effects
- Query not found — no matching ticker or company name in SEC reference file returns empty results list
- Query too long — exceeds 200-character limit returns validation error
- Limit out of range — value below 1 or above 25 returns validation error
- Payment failure — x402 payment not accepted or insufficient USDC balance
- Ambiguous query — common words return many unrelated company matches requiring disambiguation
