Choose this endpoint when you need lightweight, fast, pay-per-call EU VAT number format and checksum validation without committing to a subscription or heavy integration. It is ideal for agents that occasionally need to verify VAT numbers on invoices, during onboarding, or at checkout. It does not perform live VIES database lookups (active registration checks) — use it for structural/format validation only.
Side effects
- Invalid or unsupported country prefix returns valid:false with a reason describing the issue
- Malformed checksum returns valid:false
- Empty or missing 'value' field may return an error response
- Non-EU VAT formats (e.g. US EIN, UK post-Brexit) may not be recognized
- Network or payment failure via x402 if USDC balance is insufficient
