How this service works
EU VAT number validation against the European Commission's official VIES service, a live query of the issuing member state's national VAT register. Give a VAT id with country prefix (27 EU states plus XI) and get whether it is valid for intra-EU trade, plus registered name and address where the state discloses them. Use it for B2B invoicing and reverse-charge checks, customer onboarding/KYB and supplier data cleaning. Norway is not in VIES: use /firma.

Returns a JSON object with fields: vat (normalized VAT number), land (country code), navn (registered business name if disclosed by member state), adresse (registered address if disclosed), gyldig (boolean validity flag), kilde (data source), hentet (retrieval timestamp), sjekket (checked timestamp), and nummer (number portion).

Use this endpoint when you need a live authoritative validation of an EU VAT number against each member state's national register via VIES — ideal for B2B invoicing, reverse-charge VAT compliance, KYB onboarding, or supplier data hygiene. Covers all 27 EU member states plus Northern Ireland (XI). Do not use for Norwegian companies (NO), UK (GB) or Swiss companies — for Norwegian entities use the /firma endpoint on the same host.
Side effects
- VAT number format is invalid or unrecognized prefix — returns gyldig: false or error
- VIES service for the queried member state is temporarily unavailable — returns error or timeout
- Country prefix is not one of the 27 EU states or XI (e.g. NO, GB, CH) — not supported by this endpoint
- VAT number exists but member state does not disclose name/address — returns gyldig: true with empty navn/adresse
- Malformed or missing vat query parameter — returns 4xx error
