Exa Search — semantic web search. includeDomains/excludeDomains need full hostnames (stanford.edu), not bare TLDs (edu). Reddit and X/Twitter are unavailable — do not filter to reddit.com, twitter.com, or x.com.

A list of web search results including page titles, URLs, published dates, and text snippets, ranked by semantic relevance to the query. Results are filtered by any includeDomains or excludeDomains specified using full hostnames.

Choose this endpoint when you need semantic (meaning-based) web search rather than keyword matching, especially when you want to filter results to specific trusted domains by full hostname. Prefer it over Firecrawl Search when you need more than 10 results or don't need full page scraping. Avoid when you specifically need Reddit or Twitter/X content.
Side effects
- Domain filter specified as bare TLD (e.g. 'edu') instead of full hostname (e.g. 'stanford.edu') — results may be incorrect or filter ignored
- Query to reddit.com or twitter.com/x.com — these domains are unavailable and will not return results
- Empty or overly short query — may return irrelevant or no results
- Payment failure — x402 payment of $0.01 USDC not completed, request rejected
- Rate limiting or timeout if the semantic search index is slow to respond
