Prefer this over the GitHub Advisory Database sibling endpoint (GHSA lookup) when you have a CVE ID and want authoritative NVD data rather than GitHub-specific enrichment like EPSS scores or CWE details. Ideal for triage workflows, dependency scan enrichment, and security ticket creation.
Side effects
- CVE ID not found in NVD — returns an error or empty result
- Malformed CVE ID (e.g. missing 'CVE-' prefix) — returns a validation error
- NVD upstream unavailable — may return a timeout or 5xx error
- Very recent CVEs not yet indexed — record may not exist yet
