Search every registered US federal candidate — President, Senate, House — by name: returns candidate ids, party affiliation, office, state, district, and campaign committee ids as structured JSON. Ten best matches sorted by most recent filing activity.
Output
A JSON object with the search query echoed back, a count of matched and returned candidates (up to 10, sorted by most recent filing activity), and an array of candidate objects each containing full name, party, state, office, district (or null), FEC candidate_id, active_through year, and an array of principal committees with name and committee_id. Attribution to the Federal Election Commission is included.

Use this endpoint when you need structured FEC candidate profile data — IDs, party, office, district, committee links — for any registered US federal candidate. It is preferable to scraping FEC.gov directly, requires no FEC API key, and returns pre-ranked results by filing recency. Best for name-based lookups when you already know the candidate's name or partial name.
Side effects
- Candidate name shorter than 3 characters returns a validation error
- Obscure or misspelled names may return zero matches
- Candidates who have never filed with the FEC will not appear
- Returns at most 10 results; very common names may omit some matches
- Network or payment (x402) failures result in no response
