Use this endpoint when you need to compute travel times or distances between multiple origins and multiple destinations simultaneously — i.e. an N×M distance matrix. It is more efficient than calling the single-route directions endpoint repeatedly. Ideal for logistics optimization, nearest-location finders, delivery routing, and fleet management where batch distance data is needed.
Side effects
- Invalid or unresolvable origin/destination coordinates returns a per-element NOT_FOUND status
- Too many origins or destinations exceeds API limits and returns a 400 error
- Unsupported travel mode or routing preference combination returns a 400 INVALID_ARGUMENT
- Missing required origins or destinations fields returns a 400 error
- Network timeout on large matrices returns a 503 or partial stream
- Billing or quota exceeded returns a 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED error
