Choose this endpoint when you need cheap, fast, live web search results in structured JSON without scraping. At $0.002 per call it is cost-effective for agents that perform many searches. It is ideal as the first step in a search-then-read pipeline before fetching full page content with a /read service. Prefer it over full-browser or headless-chrome solutions when you only need ranked URLs and snippets, not full page HTML.
Side effects
- Empty results array if no pages match the query or region filter is too restrictive
- Query too long (over 400 chars) returns a validation error
- Invalid region code silently falls back to no-region search
- Network timeout or DuckDuckGo upstream failure returns a 5xx error
- Safe-search enum typo results in a 400 bad request
