Choose this endpoint when you need to modify a specific region of an existing image rather than generating a new image from scratch. It is ideal for inpainting, background swapping, object removal, or targeted style changes where you want to preserve most of the original image. Prefer this over the image Generations endpoint when you have a base image to edit. If you only need to generate an image with no base, use Generations instead.
Side effects
- Image dimensions must be square (e.g. 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024) — non-square images may be rejected
- Mask and source image must have identical dimensions — mismatch returns a validation error
- Image file size exceeds 4MB limit
- Unsupported file format (must be PNG with alpha channel for mask)
- Prompt content policy violation causes request rejection
- Model parameter specifying an unsupported model returns a 400 error
- Rate limit exceeded returns 429 error
