Output

Returns an array of up to 5 location objects, each containing the city name, state/region, country code (ISO 3166), precise lat/lon, and an extensive map of local names in dozens of languages keyed by ISO language code.

When to prefer

Use this endpoint when you have raw GPS coordinates and need to display or process a human-readable place name. Prefer over forward geocoding when your input is a coordinate pair, not a text query. Ideal for enriching location data from GPS devices, map clicks, or sensor readings with meaningful place names including multilingual variants.

Side effects

Invalid latitude (outside -90 to 90) or longitude (outside -180 to 180) returns a 400 error
Coordinates in the middle of an ocean or uninhabited area may return zero results
limit parameter outside 1–5 range may be rejected or clamped
Network timeout or upstream OpenWeatherMap API unavailability returns a 5xx error
