Output
A JSON object containing: the base currency, a timestamp (asOf/fetchedAt), the source used (coinbase, exchangerate-api, or frankfurter), date label, count of returned currencies, a rates map (currency code → units per 1 base unit), and if an amount was provided, a converted map (currency code → converted amount). Also includes a missing array for any invalid or unavailable codes.

Choose this endpoint when you need live forex rates updated approximately every minute (via Coinbase) for 160+ ISO 4217 currencies including precious metals (XAU/XAG), or ECB reference rates for any trading day back to 1999. It handles both spot conversion and historical lookups in a single API, requires no authentication, and returns structured JSON with converted amounts. Prefer it over static rate tables or cryptocurrency-only price feeds when you need broad fiat currency coverage.
Side effects
- Invalid currency code returns HTTP 400 (not charged)
- Historical date before 1999-01-04 may return no ECB data
- Currencies not covered by ECB Frankfurter (~30 majors) may be missing from historical requests
- Coinbase live feed unavailable falls back to exchangerate-api daily rates
- Requesting more than 50 target currencies at once may be rejected
