Full-text search across every SEC EDGAR filing since 2001 (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and more) by keyword, company name, or topic. Returns matching filings: company name, ticker (if available), CIK, form type, filing date, accession number, SIC code, and a direct link to the filing. Optional forms filters by comma-separated form type(s); startdt/enddt filter by filing date (YYYY-MM-DD).

A JSON object containing the search query string, total match count (with approximate flag), and an array of matching filings — each with company name, ticker (if available), CIK, form type, filing date, accession number, SIC code, and a direct URL link to the SEC EDGAR filing document.

It is ideal for investment research, compliance monitoring, competitive intelligence, and regulatory analysis where you need to find which companies disclosed specific language in specific form types. Prefer this over company-specific EDGAR lookup endpoints when you don't know which companies filed on a topic — this endpoint discovers them via keyword search rather than requiring a known CIK or ticker upfront.
Side effects
- Missing required 'q' parameter returns an error — query string is mandatory
- Very broad or common queries may return approximate total match counts (totalMatchesApproximate: true)
- No results found for highly specific or obscure queries returns empty filings array
- Invalid date format (not YYYY-MM-DD) in startdt/enddt causes parameter rejection
- Limit exceeds maximum of 50 — capped or returns error
- SEC EDGAR upstream unavailable causes service degradation
