How this service works
US electric grid monitor from EIA's Hourly Electric Grid Monitor (Form EIA-930, official Open Data API): hourly demand, day-ahead demand forecast, net generation and net interchange for a balancing authority or region (CISO, ERCO, PJM, MISO, NYIS, ISNE, SWPP, US48…), plus the generation mix by fuel (gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro…) for the latest reported hour. Times are UTC; values in MWh per hour.
Output
A JSON object containing: the balancing authority name and respondent code; latest reported values for demand, net generation, day-ahead forecast, and total interchange (each with MWh value and UTC hour); time-series arrays for each of those four metrics covering the requested number of hours; and a generation mix breakdown for the latest available hour listing each fuel type (e.g. Natural Gas, Wind, Coal, Nuclear, Solar, Hydro) with MWh and percentage share. Units are MWh per hour; times are UTC period-ending hours.

Use this endpoint when you need authoritative, official US electric grid data sourced directly from EIA Form EIA-930 — including real-time demand, generation mix by fuel type, and day-ahead forecasts at the balancing authority level. Prefer this over general energy databases when you need hourly granularity, official government data, or fuel-level generation breakdowns for US grid regions. It covers all major US balancing authorities and the contiguous US48 aggregate.
Side effects
- Invalid respondent code returns an error or empty series — must use EIA-930 codes (US48, CISO, ERCO, PJM, MISO, NYIS, ISNE, SWPP, etc.)
- Hours parameter outside 1-48 range may be rejected or clamped
- EIA upstream API unavailable or rate-limited may result in stale data or DEMO_KEY quota exhaustion
- Data freshness lag: EIA publishes with roughly a 1-hour delay so the latest hour may not yet be available
- Some smaller balancing authorities may not report a generation mix breakdown
