It is ideal for IP due diligence, competitor patent analysis, inventor research, or verifying a company's technology portfolio. It covers only US granted patents (not applications or international filings), and is best when you have a known assignee name or inventor surname to query against.
Side effects
- No patents found for given assignee or inventor name — returns empty results with zero count
- Ambiguous organization name matching multiple assignees — may return mixed results
- Inventor last name too common — returns unrelated inventors' patents
- Limit parameter out of range (must be 1–25) — validation error
- USPTO PatentsView data lag — recently granted patents may not yet be indexed
- Misspelled assignee or inventor name — zero results returned
