Choose this endpoint when you need to resolve a fediverse or decentralised identity (acct:user@domain or a resource URI) into its ActivityPub actor, profile, avatar, OIDC issuer, or remote-follow links without setting up your own WebFinger client. It is ideal for agents building federation flows, decentralised auth, or profile enrichment on top of Mastodon, Pixelfed, Misskey, or any RFC 7033-compliant server. Prefer it over raw HTTP fetches when you want a clean parsed JRD response with all relevant relations already extracted.
Side effects
- Resource or domain not found: endpoint or /.well-known/webfinger returns 404
- Domain does not support WebFinger: connection refused or no well-known route
- Invalid acct: or URI format causes a 400-style error
- Target server timeout or network error during upstream resolution
- User exists but has no links of the requested relation type — empty links array returned
