How this service works
South African reference data as clean, cited JSON: fuel prices, interest rates, FX and bond yields, tax tables, tariffs, wages and grants, live government tenders and crypto prices, plus calculators. Built for AI agents and applications.
Output
Returns a structured JSON object with a full payroll breakdown including PAYE tax amount, UIF deduction, medical aid tax credits, pension deduction, and calculated net take-home pay, all computed against current SARS tax tables. May also include a national minimum wage compliance flag if hours_per_week is supplied.
Example use cases
Employee salary offer evaluation
“I've been offered a job in South Africa with a gross salary of R55,000 per month. I'm 42, I'll contribute 10% to pension, and I have 3 medical aid members. What will my actual take-home pay look like after PAYE, UIF, and deductions?”
Minimum wage compliance check for HR
“We pay our warehouse workers R4,500 per month and they work 45 hours a week. Can you check if that's compliant with South Africa's national minimum wage and also show the payroll deductions?”
Freelancer tax planning
“I'm about to start contracting in South Africa and expect to earn R28,000 gross per month. I'm 29 and won't have a pension or medical aid yet — how much PAYE and UIF will be taken out and what will I net?”

Endpoint
POSThttps://zaref.dev/v1/answers/payroll?utm_source=zero.xyzWhen to prefer
Choose this endpoint when you need accurate, cited South African payroll calculations using current SARS tax tables, medical aid credits, and UIF rates — especially when building South Africa-specific HR tools, chatbots, or financial planning agents. Prefer this over generic salary calculators when South African compliance (PAYE, UIF, national minimum wage) is required.
Side effects
- Missing required monthly_gross field returns validation error
- Negative or zero monthly_gross may return an error or unexpected result
- Very high salary inputs may hit edge cases in tax bracket calculation
- Invalid data types (e.g. string instead of number) will cause schema validation failure
- Stale tax tables if SARS rates change mid-year before API is updated
