Choose this endpoint when you need a trustworthy, official ECB reference rate for currency conversion without requiring your own API key. It is ideal for informational, compliance-friendly, or EU-context conversions. Prefer it over commercial FX APIs when you don't need real-time mid-market or interbank rates and ECB coverage (major and European currencies) is sufficient. Not suitable for crypto, exotic pairs, or live trading rates.
Side effects
- Unsupported currency code returns an error (ECB only covers a limited set of ~32 currencies, no crypto or exotic pairs)
- Invalid or missing amount field returns a validation error
- ECB rate feed temporarily unavailable may cause a service error
- Stale rate if ECB has not yet published the day's rate (rates update ~16:00 CET on business days)
