How this service works
NFT metadata on Ethereum: the token URI of one ERC-721 token id (tokenURI) and the JSON it points to (name, description, image, attributes), read from data: URIs, https or ipfs:// (through ipfs.io). Strings over 1,000 characters, such as on-chain SVG images, are shortened. Use to show or check what an NFT is; for its owner use eth_nft_owner. A token that does not exist is 422, uncharged; unreachable metadata is reported in metadataError.
Output
Returns a JSON object containing the token's contract address, token ID, chain name, chain ID, symbol, tokenUri, and a resolved metadata object with name, description, and image fields. If the metadata could not be fetched, a metadataError field explains why. Strings longer than 1,000 characters (e.g. on-chain SVGs) are truncated.

Use this endpoint when you need the descriptive metadata (name, image, description, attributes) for a specific ERC-721 token on Ethereum mainnet. It automatically handles data: URIs, HTTPS URLs, and IPFS links. Prefer it over general blockchain RPC calls when you want resolved, human-readable NFT metadata without writing your own IPFS or URI parsing logic. For ownership queries, use the companion eth_nft_owner endpoint instead.
Side effects
- Token does not exist — returns HTTP 422, no charge
- Metadata URL unreachable (IPFS gateway timeout, dead HTTPS link) — returns metadataError field in response
- Invalid contract address format — returns validation error
- Contract is not ERC-721 — tokenURI call may revert or return unexpected data
- Very long on-chain metadata (SVG) truncated at 1,000 characters
