A ranked list of academic works with core metadata including titles, authors, publication years, DOIs, open-access status, citation counts, and concept tags — up to the requested limit (default 10, max 50).

Prefer this over /scholar/paper when you don't yet have a specific paper ID and need to survey the landscape. Ideal for literature reviews, research discovery, or finding open-access papers within a date range or from a specific institution.
Side effects
- Empty result set if query terms are too niche or misspelled
- No results when year_from/year_to range excludes all matching works
- Institution or concept name not recognized by OpenAlex returns empty or unfiltered results
- query parameter missing — required field causes 400-level error
- Rate limiting or payment failure returns 402 or 429 error
