Choose this endpoint when you need official ECB reference rates (not mid-market or broker rates), need to convert between any of the 30 ECB-tracked currencies, or need a complete multi-currency rate table anchored to a single base. Prefer it over crypto price APIs for fiat-only conversions, and over general financial data APIs when ECB authority and daily-refresh cadence are sufficient. Not suitable for real-time intraday FX trading rates or currencies outside the ECB's 30-currency basket.
Side effects
- Unsupported currency code returns an error — only the 30 ECB-listed currencies are valid
- Date falling on a weekend or ECB holiday returns no data — ECB only publishes rates on business days
- Missing required 'op' parameter (rates or convert) may result in a malformed request
- Network or upstream frankfurter.dev outage causes a 5xx error
- Stale data may be returned within the one-hour cache window
