Use this endpoint when you need to look up individual US healthcare provider NPI records (NPI type 1 only) by name and state from the official CMS NPPES registry. Prefer this over general web search when you need structured, authoritative NPI data including credentials, taxonomy codes, and practice locations. Not suitable for organizational/group NPI-2 lookups or lookups by NPI number directly.
Side effects
- No matching providers found for the given last name and state combination — returns empty providers array
- State code not a valid 2-letter US code — may return error or empty result
- Last name shorter than 2 or longer than 40 characters — schema validation failure
- Limit parameter outside 1-20 range — may be ignored or cause error
- CMS NPPES upstream API downtime — may return error or stale data
