Prefer this over live-rate APIs when the query is historical (not real-time) and over generic FX APIs when ECB provenance matters. The micro-payment model ($0.002/call) makes it cost-effective for low-to-moderate volume lookups without a subscription.
Side effects
- Invalid date format returns an error — use YYYY-MM-DD or MM/DD/YYYY
- Dates before ECB historical data availability may return no data
- Invalid 3-letter currency code in base or symbols returns an error
- Weekend/holiday dates silently return the prior business day's rates (not an error, but may surprise callers)
- Payment failure via x402 means the call is not charged and no data is returned
