Use this endpoint when you need real-time ECB reference FX rates for one or many currency pairs in a single call, particularly when you want a pay-per-use model (no subscription) and are already operating in a crypto-native or x402-compatible payment environment. Prefer it over subscription FX APIs when usage is sporadic or when you need a broad basket of currencies cheaply. Not suitable for live transaction benchmarking or high-frequency trading where tick-level accuracy is required.
Side effects
- Invalid 3-letter currency code returns an error or empty rates object
- Unsupported or misspelled currency symbol in the symbols field may be silently omitted or return an error
- ECB reference rates are only updated on business days — weekend/holiday queries return the most recent available date
- Network or upstream Frankfurter outage returns a 5xx error
- Payment failure via x402 means the call is not charged and no data is returned
