Use this endpoint when you need authoritative domain ownership and registration metadata — particularly registrar, dates, nameservers, and organisation — rather than DNS record resolution. Prefer this over DNS record lookups when the question is about who owns or registered a domain, when it expires, or whether it's a newly registered (potentially suspicious) domain. It complements the sibling DNS-record resolver endpoint which handles A/AAAA/MX/TXT records.
Side effects
- Domain not found or not registered — returns empty or error response
- WHOIS data redacted due to GDPR privacy protection — fields may be missing
- Rate limiting by upstream WHOIS servers causing timeouts
- Invalid domain format in input — validation error
- TLD without public WHOIS service may return incomplete data
