Prefer this over the sibling 'significant earthquakes' endpoint when you want raw magnitude-based filtering rather than USGS significance-score filtering, or when recency and newest-first ordering is the primary concern.
Side effects
- Source unavailability: USGS feed unreachable — endpoint may serve a stale validated snapshot (stale: true) or return an error
- No events found: valid query but zero earthquakes match the magnitude/time criteria — returns empty events array with count 0
- Invalid parameters: hours outside 1–720, limit outside 1–200, or magnitude outside -2–10 — returns validation error
- Rate limiting or payment failure: x402 payment not processed — request rejected before data is returned
