It is ideal for briefings, research, or monitoring scenarios where event importance (combining magnitude, felt reports, and media attention) matters more than magnitude alone. Use the sibling 'Recent earthquakes' endpoint if you want newest-first results filtered purely by magnitude without a significance score filter.
Side effects
- No events returned if significance threshold is set too high for the time window selected
- Stale flag set to true when a cached snapshot is served instead of a live query
- Query parameter validation errors if days exceeds 365 or min_significance exceeds 2000
- Empty event list for very short time windows with high significance thresholds
- Service unavailable if upstream USGS feed is unreachable
