Find the DOI and metadata for a work from a title, author or keyword string when the DOI is unknown.
Output
Returns a list of matching academic works from the Crossref database, each including the DOI, title, author list, publication year, journal or conference name, publisher, and other bibliographic metadata. Up to 20 results can be returned, defaulting to 5.

Prefer this over direct DOI lookup endpoints when the DOI is unknown. Ideal for citation repair, literature discovery, and bibliographic enrichment workflows where the input is fuzzy or partial.
Side effects
- Query too vague returns irrelevant or zero results
- Author name ambiguity returns works by wrong author
- Very new or obscure works may not yet be indexed in Crossref
- Misspelled title fragment may fail to match
- Rate limits or upstream Crossref API unavailability return errors
