Use this endpoint when you need to screen or rank US hospitals by financial or operational criteria across a geographic market — especially when combining location filters (state, city, ZIP) with financial thresholds (revenue, margin, discharges) or facility characteristics (beds, hospital type, control type). Prefer this over the single-hospital history endpoint when you need a broad market overview rather than one institution's time-series. CMS HCRIS data is authoritative for cost and volume metrics.

• No hospitals match the specified filter combination — returns empty results list
• Invalid state abbreviation or unrecognized control_type/hospital_type enum value — may return 400 or empty results
• Offset beyond total result count returns empty page
• fy_end_year outside available data range returns no results
