What can I use instead of buttermilk, self-raising flour, creme fraiche or sour cream? Get head chef Cristopher's verified swaps: yes, no or depends (and on what), with amount and context where given, including swaps not to make. Also fresh herbs, butter, oil, sugar, flour, fresh tomatoes, fresh stock, whole spices; others get a 404 listing them. Refused, never guessed: allergens and dairy-, egg- or gluten-free swaps, storage, preserving. Only a 200 answer is charged; refusals and 404s are free.

Use this endpoint when you need authoritative, chef-verified ingredient substitutions for a specific cooking context, especially for common baking staples like buttermilk, self-raising flour, creme fraiche, sour cream, butter, oil, sugar, flour, fresh herbs, fresh tomatoes, fresh stock, or whole spices. Prefer this over generic LLM-generated substitution advice when you need a definitive yes/no/depends verdict with specific amounts. Do not use this for allergen substitutions, dietary-restriction swaps (dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free), or food storage questions — those are explicitly out of scope.
Side effects
- 404 returned for unsupported ingredients (e.g. allergen swaps, dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free swaps, storage or preservation queries) — these are free and not charged
