Pass `q`; optional `outputType` (sourcedAnswer default — synthesized answer with sources | searchResults — raw ranked hits | structured — pass `structuredOutputSchema` JSON-schema string), `fromDate`/`toDate` (ISO), `includeDomains`/`excludeDomains`, `includeImages`, `includeInlineCitations`. Standard depth — one-pass retrieval. For hard multi-hop questions escalate to linkup/deep-search (5¢).
Output
Returns one of: (1) a synthesized natural-language answer with cited source URLs and optional inline citations; (2) a ranked list of raw web search hits with titles, URLs, and snippets; or (3) a structured JSON object conforming to a user-supplied JSON schema, all derived from live web retrieval.

Choose this endpoint when you need a fast, single-pass AI-synthesized answer from the live web with source citations, optionally filtered by date or domain. Prefer it over raw keyword search APIs (e.g. Brave) when you want an LLM-synthesized answer rather than a list of links. Use it over the deep-search variant for standard questions where cost matters ($0.01 vs $0.05). Choose it over static knowledge bases when you need current, real-time information.
Side effects
- Empty or vague query returns low-quality or no results
- Date range filters that are too narrow may return zero results
- Domain inclusion/exclusion filters that conflict or are too restrictive may yield no hits
- Multi-hop or complex reasoning questions may produce shallow answers — escalate to deep-search endpoint
- Malformed structuredOutputSchema JSON string causes structured output to fail
