Choose this endpoint when you need official ECB foreign-exchange reference rates for major fiat currencies, either the latest or for a specific historical date back to 1999. It is ideal for financial reporting, invoice reconciliation, and compliance use cases that require authoritative central-bank rates. It does not cover cryptocurrencies or exotic currencies not in the ECB set — use a dedicated crypto or exotic FX provider for those.
Side effects
- Unsupported base currency returns an error — only ECB-covered currencies (~30 majors) are valid
- Date before 1999-01-04 returns an error — ECB data only goes back to that date
- Weekend or holiday date may return the previous business day's rates or an error
- Invalid ISO 4217 currency code in symbols param returns an error or is silently omitted
- No ECB data for a specific date (e.g. holiday) may fall back to nearest available date
