How this service works
EV charging stations near a point. Primary source OpenStreetMap (Overpass): name, operator, network, socket types, capacity, access, hours. For US points when Overpass is unavailable, the US DOE/NREL Alternative Fuel Stations directory is used instead. PlugShare itself has no public API, so its reviews and live status are not included.
Output
A JSON object containing a count of matching stations, the data source URL, and an array of station objects each with an ID, latitude, longitude, name, access type (public/private), network name, socket type list, capacity (number of ports or null), operator, distance in metres from the query point, and opening hours. Also includes a checkedAt timestamp indicating when the data was fetched.

It is the right choice when you need structured data (socket types, operator, network, access, hours) rather than live occupancy or user reviews. Prefer this over proprietary charging-network APIs when you want broad coverage across multiple networks in a single call. For US locations it benefits from NREL fallback coverage. Not suitable if you need real-time charger availability, live occupancy status, or PlugShare-sourced user reviews.
Side effects
- Overpass API unavailable and point is outside the US — no fallback available, may return empty or error
- Coordinates out of valid range (lat not in -90 to 90 or lon not in -180 to 180) — likely 400 error
- Radius or limit outside allowed bounds (radius < 100 or > 10000, limit < 1 or > 50) — validation error
- Remote area with no EV stations — returns count 0 and empty stations array
- OpenStreetMap data may be outdated or incomplete for less-mapped regions
