It provides structured JSON with historical weekly snapshots broken down by trader category (commercials, large speculators, small traders), which is ideal for sentiment analysis, market positioning research, or macro trading signals. Prefer this over scraping CFTC's website directly or parsing raw COT report files.
Side effects
- Market name not found — returns empty markets array if the search term doesn't match any CFTC market
- Weeks parameter out of range (must be 1–26) — may return error or clamp to valid range
- Stale data — CFTC COT data is weekly (released Fridays for Tuesday positions), so the latest report may be up to a week old
- Multiple markets returned — a broad search term like 'GOLD' may return both GOLD and MICRO GOLD contracts
- No data for very recent weeks — if the latest report hasn't been processed yet, history may be shorter than requested
