How this service works
Call when an agent needs a near-real-time FX bid, ask, and mid for one pair such as EURUSD. Kraken's public book supplies bid and ask, which can be wide, plus the spread timestamp. If Kraken fails, Yahoo's last price is the mid and bid and ask are null. Distinct from daily ECB fx-rates. Send JSON {"pair":"EURUSD"}. Exact $0.003 USDC on Base. Use this endpoint when you need a near-real-time FX tick (bid, ask, mid) for a major currency pair sourced from Kraken's live order book, and you do NOT need an official daily ECB reference rate. Prefer this over ECB endpoints when timeliness and spread data matter, and over generic currency converters when you need structured bid/ask data for one of the 12 supported pairs.
Side effects
- Kraken API failure causes bid/ask to return null with Yahoo Finance last price as mid only
- Unsupported currency pair returns an error (only 12 pairs supported)
- Malformed pair format may be rejected (though slash/dash variants are accepted)
- Network timeout from upstream providers results in error response
- Payment failure (non-exact USDC amount) blocks access to the paid endpoint
