Prefer it over token balance endpoints when you need the native coin balance (ETH/MATIC/etc.) rather than ERC-20 tokens. It's especially useful for pre-transaction checks, wallet verification workflows, or determining whether an address hosts deployed code before interacting with it.
Side effects
- Invalid address format (not a 40-char hex prefixed with 0x) — returns validation error
- Unsupported chain name — returns error listing valid chains (ethereum, base, arbitrum, optimism, polygon)
- RPC node unavailability even after fallback — returns upstream error
