Use this endpoint when you need to discover, enumerate, or search G2's software category taxonomy — for example, to find the correct G2 category slug before navigating to a category page, to build a category map for market research, or to identify which G2 categories exist for a given software domain. It does not return product listings, reviews, or ratings — only category metadata.
Side effects
- No categories match the filter query — returns empty categories array with count 0
- Limit parameter out of range (must be 1–500) — may return error or default behavior
- G2 public directory changes structure — category data may become stale
- Network timeout from upstream G2 data source
