How this service works
When a prime wins federal work, who does it flow subcontracts and subgrants down to? Search USAspending subawards (File F prime → sub cascade) by sub-recipient or prime name/UEI, prime award id, awarding agency, NAICS, PSC, subaward type (contract/grant), place-of-performance state, amount, or action date. Set new_subawardee=true for first-time subawardees — subs with NO prime award on record, coming up through subcontracts (a bonding/staffing/lending/teaming lead). Public federal records.
Output
Returns a paginated list of subaward records from USAspending File F data, each containing sub-recipient name, UEI, subaward amount, action date, subaward type (contract or grant), prime award details (prime name, UEI, award ID), awarding agency, NAICS and PSC codes, place-of-performance state, and a flag indicating whether the sub-recipient is a first-time subawardee with no prime award on record.

Use this endpoint when you need to trace the downstream flow of federal contract or grant dollars from prime awardees to their subcontractors and subgrantees, especially for competitive intelligence, compliance research, small business teaming analysis, or identifying first-time market entrants with no prime award history. Prefer this over prime award search endpoints when the subject of interest is the sub-recipient relationship rather than the direct federal award.
Side effects
- No results returned when name fragment is too generic or misspelled — try UEI for exact match
- Invalid date format (not YYYY-MM-DD) returns a validation error
- UEI not found if sub-recipient is not registered in SAM.gov
- NAICS prefix too broad may return up to the 100-row cap without covering all results — use offset for paging
- new_subawardee flag combined with other restrictive filters may yield zero results if no qualifying records exist
- PSC code must be exact — partial PSC codes may return no results
