Output
A JSON object containing an array of timestamped carbon intensity readings for the requested zone, each with a Unix timestamp, numeric value, and unit. Also includes the zone ID, metric name ('carbon-intensity'), total count of rows returned, and a license/attribution field identifying the data source (e.g. NESO Open Licence for GB).

Use this endpoint when you specifically need carbon intensity data (gCO₂eq/kWh or equivalent) for a named electricity zone, as opposed to wholesale price or demand data. It is the right choice for sustainability, carbon-aware computing, ESG reporting, or renewable scheduling applications. Prefer the sibling 'latest' or 'snapshot' endpoints if you only need the most recent single value; use this endpoint for time series over a custom window. The 'sample=true' parameter makes it easy to test without payment.
Side effects
- Invalid or unsupported zone ID returns an error — must use one of the 25 enumerated zone strings (e.g. 'US-CAISO', 'GB')
- Start/end timestamps out of available data range may return empty data arrays
- Exceeding the row limit of 5000 may truncate results silently
- Missing payment (x402) causes a 402 Payment Required response — use the 'sample=true' query param for a free truncated preview
- Network timeouts possible if querying large time windows near the 5000-row limit
