Use this endpoint when an agent already holds an exact ontology code (RxNorm, ICD-10-CM, or LOINC) and must retrieve the authoritative preferred display term without inventing, paraphrasing, or hallucinating it. Prefer this over general LLM recall for any production clinical, billing, or regulatory context where accuracy of terminology is mandatory. Choose this over a full text-search endpoint when the code is known and only the canonical label is needed.
Side effects
- Code not found in the specified ontology — returns 404 or empty result
- Ambiguous code submitted without specifying the code system — may return wrong ontology match
- Malformed or invalid code format — returns 400 bad request
- Ontology data lag — very recently added codes may not yet be indexed
- Network or service timeout at $0.005 per call — charge may occur even on failure
