Choose this endpoint when you need live, ranked web search results with neural semantic understanding or keyword matching, especially when you need category filtering (news, research papers, GitHub, tweets), domain restriction, or date-bounded searches. Prefer /exa/answer (sibling endpoint) when you need a direct synthesized answer rather than a list of source URLs. Best suited for agents that need to discover and cite sources rather than receive a summarized answer.
Side effects
- Empty results array if no web pages match the query
- Query too long (>1000 chars) rejected with validation error
- num_results clamped to 10 if higher value provided
- Snippet mode clamps results to 2 if highlights or text requested
- Invalid category string returns error or empty results
- Date filter returning no results if range is too narrow
- Payment failure if USDC balance insufficient on Base or Solana
