How this service works
China's applied import tariff for a 6-digit HS code from the World Bank WITS tariff database (UNCTAD TRAINS, as reported by China): MFN simple average, minimum and maximum duty rate across the national tariff lines, number of lines and the year. HS-6 level, not the 8/10-digit China customs line; VAT, consumption tax and retaliatory surcharges are not included. Another reporting country can be chosen with its ISO numeric code.
Output
A JSON object containing the 6-digit HS code, the reporting country ISO code, the tariff type (MFN), the simple average duty rate percentage, the minimum and maximum duty rate percentages, the number of national tariff lines, the data year, the nomenclature level (H6), a timestamp of when the data was checked, and the source URL pointing to the World Bank WITS API.
Example use cases
Landed cost estimate for China import
“I'm importing stainless steel screws (HS code 731815) into China and need to estimate the total duty. What's China's MFN simple average tariff rate for that HS code, and what are the min and max rates?”
Country tariff comparison for market entry
“We're deciding between shipping auto parts (HS code 870899) to China versus Japan. Can you pull the MFN tariff rates from WITS for HS code 870899 for China (country code 156) and Japan (country code 392) so we can compare?”
Compliance check for trade agreement pricing
“Our supplier says China's MFN duty on lithium-ion batteries (HS code 850760) is around 8% — can you verify that against the World Bank WITS database and tell me the exact simple average rate and what year the data is from?”

Endpoint
GEThttps://api.tradeenergy-api.workers.dev/api/logistics/china-customs-tariffs?utm_source=zero.xyzWhen to prefer
Use this endpoint when you need official World Bank WITS/UNCTAD TRAINS MFN tariff data for China (or another reporting country) at the HS-6 level, including aggregate statistics (simple average, min, max, line count). Prefer this over scraping customs authority websites when you need structured, programmatic access to internationally standardized tariff data. Note: this does not include VAT, consumption tax, retaliatory surcharges, or preferential/FTA rates — use alternative sources for those.
Side effects
- Invalid or non-existent HS code returns an error or empty result
- HS code provided at 8 or 10 digit level instead of 6 digits may not match
- No tariff data available for a given reporter/HS combination returns null or empty
- Invalid ISO numeric country code returns an error
- WITS upstream database unavailable causes a service error
- Data may lag by 1-2 years depending on country reporting to UNCTAD TRAINS
