It is ideal for SEO audits, content freshness checks, and pre-crawl URL discovery. Prefer this over manual web scraping when a structured sitemap is available, as it is faster and authoritative. It handles XML sitemaps, sitemap indexes (one level), text sitemaps, and gzip compression natively.
Side effects
- Invalid or inaccessible URL returns an error (non-200 HTTP response or network timeout)
- URL pointing to a non-sitemap resource (HTML page, PDF) causes a parse error
- Sitemap index expansion is only one level deep — nested sitemap indexes are not recursed
- max_urls cap of 1000 means very large sitemaps are truncated
- Malformed XML in the sitemap may cause partial or failed extraction
- Gzip decompression failures on corrupted archives return an error
