Returns a reply_text string (in markdown or plain text depending on the parameter), a conversation_id for continuing the thread in future calls, and an array of reference_links — each containing a URL, page title, publisher name, favicon URL, and a content snippet — representing the web sources Gemini grounded its answer on. If no web search was performed, reference_links is empty.

Side effects
- Missing required 'message' field returns a 400-level validation error
- Invalid or expired conversation_id may start a new conversation instead of continuing the prior one
- Gemini service unavailability or rate limiting results in a non-'ok' status field
- Long or ambiguous messages may produce incomplete or truncated replies
- When no web sources are found, reference_links is an empty array and the answer may be based solely on Gemini's training data
