Choose this endpoint when you need a quick, low-cost USD price lookup for a major cryptocurrency by its ticker symbol (ETH, BTC, SOL, etc.) and want a 24h change included without managing API keys. Prefer this over CoinGecko direct if you want pay-per-call pricing via x402 with no registration. For Base-specific token prices by contract address, use the sibling contract-address price endpoint instead.
Side effects
- Unknown or unsupported symbol returns an error or empty response
- Stale data if CoinGecko upstream is delayed
- Symbol ambiguity if ticker maps to multiple tokens
- Network or payment failure via x402 protocol returns 402 or 5xx
