How this service works
Exchange rates API for AI agents. Every ECB reference rate for a base currency (or just the quotes you list) on the latest or a past date. Search intents: exchange rates api, fx rates table, currency rates today, usd exchange rates, ecb reference rates.
Output
A JSON object containing the base currency code, the effective date (adjusted to the nearest ECB business day if a weekend or holiday is requested), a count of returned rates, and a map of currency codes to their numeric exchange rates relative to the base. Also includes source attribution (ECB via Frankfurter) and a boolean indicating whether the rates were derived (cross-computed) from ECB euro rates.

Choose this endpoint when you need official ECB reference rates (not mid-market or broker rates) for a broad set of currency pairs, historical rate lookups, or when you want a structured rates table with a configurable base currency. Prefer it over general forex APIs when ECB provenance and a consistent 31-currency universe matter. It is especially useful when the agent needs to cross-compute derived rates or retrieve data for a specific past date.
Side effects
- Unsupported base currency: ECB only publishes rates for 31 currencies, so an unsupported ISO code returns an error
- Weekend or holiday date: resolved silently to the previous ECB publication date — agent should check returned date
- Invalid date format: must be YYYY-MM-DD or the API returns a validation error
- Invalid quotes parameter: unrecognised currency codes in the comma-separated list may be silently dropped or return an error
- Payment failure: x402 micropayment of $0.001 USDC required per call; missing or invalid payment returns a 402 response
